Are You Moving During the Holidays?
As we mentioned a few weeks ago, selling your home during the holidays makes sense for many reasons, but if you’re also moving into your new home around the holidays, you may be anticipating a lot of stress.
It’s easy to see why. Moving day is traditionally such a hectic and emotionally charged experience that we even have reality shows about it. Add the holidays obligations to the mix & you can see potential chaos on the horizon!
Does it have to be that way? We can’t do much about the holidays, but there are things you can do to help ease the stress of moving.
The most obvious place to start is by choosing a reputable moving company, or making similar arrangements to transport your belongings. Confirm exactly when they will be arriving and be sure they’ll be bringing a large enough truck – very important.
Here are some other tips you might not have considered:
- Put the pets in a kennel for the day. Pets often become upset by the activity and change in routine. Sometimes they hide where you can’t find them. Even worse, they can get outdoors and run away.
- Have healthy snacks available. Vegetables, fruit, nuts, juices and water are all natural energizers.
- Hire a babysitter for the kids. It’s going to be a very long day – why not make it a fun day for them.
- Call your mover the day before you are scheduled to load to confirm all is still a “go.”
- Clearly mark boxes that contain items you’ll need immediately. Although you should take your valuables with you in the car, also think about the clothes, cookware, computer accessories, toys and other items you’ll want to find easily during the first week in your new home.
A little planning can help make your moving day (and holidays) drama-free. Unless, of course, you really want to be on a reality show!
