Retirees & Baby Boomers Embracing “Aging In Place”
The Most Recent Trends Driven By Pre-Retirement Baby Boomers In Tampa Bay & Across the Nation
Not everyone dreams of retiring in a sunny southern climate like the Tampa Bay Area these days. In fact, baby boomers between the ages of 60 and 69 are searching for locales with inexpensive housing, a thriving economy and lots of activities. These needs are driving boomers to explore locations that are definitely outside of the typical retirement areas. At every life stage, baby boomers have defined what’s trending and they will continue to do now, on the brink of their leisure years.
“Aging In Place” Remodeling Surge
According to a survey of Houzz, over half of homeowners aged 60+ prefer to retire in their current home. These retirees want to stay at home to be close to family, friends and the lives that they’ve established over the years. Yet the residences that worked so well for their busy family lifestyle will need a transformation in order to carry them into retirement, and that is driving a surge in home remodeling within this demographic. With a majority of retirees now wanting to stay put, they are looking to modify their existing home to fulfill that goal.
Boomers Fuel Remodeling Projects
At the top of the remodeling list is the bathroom. The renovating trend is all about creating a more spacious bathroom with higher toilets, warming radiant flooring, secure shower benches and removable shower heads. Leaving enough space for multiple people, like a home health aide, to function comfortably is another consideration. In the kitchen, cabinets are being lowered and organizational upgrades are being added, like custom pull-out drawers, enhanced lighting and easy access storage areas. But people still want these spaces to look as stunning as they perform and will also incorporate items with design appeal: new countertops, fancy back splashes and farmhouse sinks.
Boomers Are Working Longer, Phasing In Retirement
Once retired from their main career, many Boomers are planning on phasing into retirement while still working part-time or in some other capacity. The allure of a town with a thriving economy makes this plan more achievable and offers plenty of entertainment options too.
