Want To Party Like It’s 1565?
Celebrate St. Augustine’s 450th Birthday This Labor Day Weekend!
America’s oldest city and one of Florida’s most history-rich destinations, the city of St. Augustine, will celebrate its 450th birthday with Celebrate 450! If you’ve never visited this scenic beach-lined city, this will be a great time to do so. St. Augustine’s Celebrate 450 birthday event runs from September 3rd to 8th and promises to be a grand celebration filled with music, parades, entertainment and local pride.
Way before the American Revolution, Jamestown and the Pilgrims, there was 1565—the year that Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed near St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. Although he never quite found a spring with anti-aging powers, he definitely found Florida.
Celebrate 450 kicks off Thursday, September 3rd with three live Spanish performances that offer a musical connection to St Augustine’s cultural heritage. The rest of the weekend’s schedule is packed with so many events that we can’t even list them all, but the highlights include historic reenactments, festivals, live performances, fireworks, entertainers, a cake cutting and a huge assortment of musical numbers from bagpipes to drums to bands. Legendary singer Aaron Neville, EmmyLou Harris and a host of others will be performing on the Main Stage on the Bayfront. The 450th birthday event will culminate with a commemorative mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine.
The best part is that all of these great events are FREE! No tickets are necessary to join in the fun. What an exciting opportunity to celebrate the multicultural richness of America’s first city. Happy Birthday St. Augustine! You don’t look a day over 30.
