Located approximately 30 minutes north of Tampa International Airport, Wesley Chapel was named after the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. With the arrival of the interstate systems in the late 1960’s and 1970’s, the area became increasingly more attractive to those seeking relief from Tampa’s congestion. The area still offers affordable country living with large lots, trees and equestrian opportunities; however buyers can also find gated communities with family-friendly facilities.
The area also straddles the boundary line between Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. Aggressive growth over the past 5 years has caused new subdivisions such as Country Walk, Watergrass, Seven Oaks, New River Lakes, Bridgewater, Chapel Pines to emerge amid the more established communities of MeadowPointe, Northwood, Lexington Oaks and others. New schools have been built and the new Wiregrass Mall and the Groves of Wesley Chapel mall have also opened. One of the area’s largest sports complexes with soccer fields, football, baseball, swimming, playgrounds and meeting space is located off Boyette Rd, north of S.R 54. Additional shopping, restaurants and entertainment can be found in New Tampa to the south.
The jewel of Wesley Chapel is the luxurious 480 acre golf and tennis club, “Saddlebrook Resort” built in 1980. The club is headquarters for the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy and boasts a spa, top notch banquet facilities and world class golf and tennis plus upscale residences and exceptional vacation amenities.
The 2000 Census states that slightly more than 50% of Wesley Chapel residents own their own homes with a large percentage finding employment outside of the county in professional, management, sales and technical jobs. The largest age group falls between 25-44. There have been over 700 single family home sales in the past year priced from below $100,000 to approximately $1,000,000 with an average home price of $300,000. There have been approximately 100 sales of town homes, villas and condos offering low maintenance living at prices from below $100,000 to over $200,000.
